Given the move for mask mandates, that do not differentiate medical vs non-medical masks, is there any more information you could provide as to the utility of simple cloth masks and the role they play in reducing transmission or likelihood of contracting an illness? The article displays a graphic that shows cloth masks “blocking” 28% of particulate air pollution whereas the surgical and N95 masks block 80% and 96% respectively. I appreciate the thoughtful and diligent response. I am concerned that putting off the nuanced discussion you speak of while proceeding with “face covering” mandates will only cede distrust and contempt. Polarization and politics seem to supercede objectivity and transparency on this issue. If there isn’t a clear and rational line of communication on this I feel that putting off this type of information will only breed more civil unrest. Our leaders have sowed distrust. These types of discussions work to scale that back. Thank you for entertaining these thoughts and questions.

Hi John, thanks for sharing. A question, as per your research, what do you know about 3 layers cloth masks of polyester and cotton or other material (i read that polyester creates electrostatic barriers that attract the virus), plus a PM2.5 Filter. That would create an 8 layer protection mask. I understand that it is NOT reaching the level of protection for the wearer that N95, FFP2 or FFP3 respirators.
