If you’re from the UK, and looking to visit a country currently on the FCO’s “all but essential travel” list – you’re limited in terms of what travel insurance you can get. Most travel insurance by default won’t cover you (!)

I was in the same boat recently, and came across a travel insurance company called StaySure who will insure you, if you purchase their add on called “European Travel Advice Extension Cover” – which adds cover for countries in Europe (Plus Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey). Great if your destination is one of these, but no help if you’re looking to visit elsewhere.

The caveat to this cover, as far as I understand it, is that they won’t cover you for Covid-19 related issues. Thus if you got sick with coronavirus and needed medical treatment, you wouldn’t be able to reclaim the costs against their policy. However, you would still be covered for the other typical reasons we get travel insurance, such as unforeseen illness or accidents.

I hadn’t heard of StaySure before, but was encouraged to see they have, at the time of writing, a 4.7 rating on TrustPilot, after 128,000 reviews. Which seems pretty good for an insurance company.

In order to access the aforementioned add-on when buying insurance, you need to:

  • Go through the process for getting a quote – inputting your destination, duration of visit and personal details
  • Then, on the 3rd page “Quote Results”, you want to scroll down to “personalise your policy” and put a check in the box for “European Travel Advice Extension Cover”.
  • It will look similar to the image below, but the price you pay will vary based on destination, and all your personal details.

That’s about all there is to it. To read more about the add-on, you can view it’s specific policy document linked here.
