The label direction is 1 tablespoon (15 ml) daily before bed. Eric Berg’s own instruction is more cautious. Eric Berg’s Own Account Of L. Reuteri

He went into the Davis protocol sceptical, by his own description. What he says he then noticed, in order:

  • Day three: A social shift, which he describes through his wife’s reaction that he wanted to hug her “like five times a day”.
  • Four to six months in: Weight from 185 lb to 195 lb, which he attributes to muscle and says was the only change he made.
  • Sleep: Waking at 6:30am instead of 4 or 4:30, with workout soreness resolving.
  • Stress: A calmer baseline, which he frames as oxytocin lowering cortisol (source).

He also traces his own presumed loss of the microbe to repeated childhood antibiotic courses for sore throats.

Why Eric Berg Focuses On L. Reuteri

His argument is that this microbe is unusual in colonising the small intestine rather than the colon, where it produces bacteriocins that suppress the overgrowth behind bloating and SIBO, and that decades of antibiotic use have stripped it from most people.

The prevalence number is where care is needed. William Davis’s wording is that “about 4% of people, 1 in 25 people still have it”, which he presents as a best estimate from recent evidence with a confirming study only proposed (source). Eric Berg repeats it as 96–97% of the population missing the microbe. It is an estimate quoted as a statistic.

Author’s note: The direction of travel is reasonable. Reviews of L. reuteri describe a marked decline in its prevalence in human populations over recent decades, and the microbe does have real RCT support in specific indications, including reduced bone loss in older women with low bone mineral density (source) and improved bowel movement frequency in adult chronic functional constipation (source). What no peer-reviewed source supplies is the 96% figure itself, or trial evidence for the muscle, testosterone and waist-circumference effects (source).

Fermented Foods Over Capsules

The consistent editorial line across his content is that food is the primary source and supplements are secondary. Most supermarket yogurt is pasteurised, which kills the cultures, so what reaches the gut is dead bacteria plus lactose and added sugar (source).

The per-serving counts he cites, all approximate and heavily dependent on brand and ferment:

  • Kefir: Around 27 billion colony forming units (CFU), roughly nine times yogurt, with most of the lactose consumed during fermentation.

This is the part of his content that needs the most care. His three-part stack is to re-establish B. infantis and L. reuteri through home-cultured dairy rather than pills, add selenium at 200 mcg, and take vitamin D at doses well above conventional levels to get past what he calls vitamin D resistance. He also suggests three-day water fasts to raise regulatory T cell counts (source).

The vitamin D figures he gives are 8,000 to 10,000 IU per day for maintenance, rising to “20, 30, 40, 50,000 international units every single day” for a therapeutic effect (source).

Author’s note: The tolerable upper intake level for vitamin D in adults is 4,000 IU per day, and sustained intake above that carries a hypercalcaemia risk (source). Eric Berg’s therapeutic range sits at five to twelve times that limit. Anyone weighing this is in territory that needs blood monitoring and a doctor, not a video.
